Here’s the Donegal Sport Hub Sports Person of the Month for March

CHRISTY FILDARA ETCHED his name into the annals of Carndonagh Community School last month.

In the FAIS Senior Cup final, Fildara netted a brilliant extra-time winner for Carndonagh CS, as they landed the Dr Tony O’Neill Cup for the first time, overoming Presentation Brothers College of Cork 2-1 at Home Farm.

The 18-year-old Fildara is enjoying a season of his dreams.

His winner for Carndonagh CS came amid a busy month at club level with Glengad United, who are aiming to retain their Jackie Crossan Premier Division title in the Inishowen League.

Yesterday, Fildara was presented with the Donegal Sport Hub Sports Person of the Month award, in association with Michael Murphy Sports & Leisure, for March in recognition of his superb exploits.

“It was brilliant, I couldn’t have wished for any better,” Fildara says modestly.

“I closed my eyes and just hit it. It was powerful. We were all thinking about penalties. It was the perfect year for us.”

Glengad won four games in eight days recently to close the gap on Clonmany Shamrocks and the title race is set up for a final day showdown between the two heavyweights.

March saw Glengad reach the Ulster Junior Cup final – they meet Culdaff this Sunday in the final – and they’ve since advanced in the Knockalla Caravans Cup, too, and recorded a vital League win over Illies last month.

Glengad’s epic run in the FAI Junior Cup was ended by Pike Rovers 4-0.

Fildara scored one of the goals against Rasheney in a 3-3 draw in the Charlie O’Donnell Cup quarter-final, won by Glengad on penalties.

‘A smashing player’, is how Glengad manager Shane Byrne describes the teenager.

‘We had him in last year and held him back for a bit. It’s the right time for him this season and he’s proved that.’

Fildara says: “It’s flat out and there isn’t much rest, but you enjoy it when you’re winning.
