Audio: Junior Russell and Garvan Grieve look to go out on a high for Glencar Celtic

JUNIOR RUSSELL AND Garvan Grieve are stepping down as the joint managers of Glencar Celtic after this season – but they could leave on a high after booking a place in the Voodoo Venue Cup final.

Their goalkeeper, Dominic Friel, saved two penalties in the shoot-out yesterday as Glencar defeated Arranmore United.

Declan Scanlon’s goal for Glencar in the 62nd minute was cancelled out just seven minutes later by Michael McHugh and it took penalties to separate them, although Glencar had been the better side throughout.

“That was the best we’ve played all year,” Russell said.

“We have that in our locker. The boys were up for that game today. We dug deep and they’re a credit to their jersey, but we have a lot of work to do.”

Grieve played for Glencar yesterday and was worried at a stage when Glencar were on top without putting their chances away.

“I thought it was going to be one of those days,” Grieve said.

“That can play in your mind when you don’t take chances, but everyone gave it their all. We rode our luck and we gave away a couple of silly free kicks.”
