ROMA MCLAUGHLIN has been named as the Continental Tyres Women’s National League Player of the Month award for January/February.

The Greencastle woman lines out for Peamount United and, in her first season in the League, has been in superb form lately, scoring a goal in the win over Castlebar Celtic.

“I’ve been playing well, but my team-mates have been so important. I definitely owe them so much and I wouldn’t be able to play my game without them,” said McLaughlin.

Operating as a playmaker has allowed McLaughlin to play to her strengths.

McLaughlin said: “It has been massively different for me to play in the League,” she explained.

“It is more physical, faster, and demanding than what I was used to. It also makes you think faster because you don’t get a lot of time on the ball, but that suits my game.

“I can definitely feel the benefits of playing in the League as I’m fitter than I have ever been, which is huge for me because I’ve had a lot of injury problems. So playing in the League has helped me to develop.”

McLaughlin is part of Dave Connell’s Women’s Under 19 squad who are in Portugal for two midweek friendly games – the first of which is tomorrow in Faro – before she returns to WNL action on Saturday as Peamount take on UCD Waves.
