James Gallagher joins Glenswilly squad for 2016

GLENSWILLY HAVE ADDED goalkeeper James Gallagher to their ranks for the 2016 campaign.

Gallagher played his first game for Glenswilly this afternoon in a Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta win over Glenfin at Pairc Naomh Columba.

Goals from Caoimhin Marley, Christopher McMonagle and Caolan Kelly sealed a comfortable 3-12 to 1-4 win for Michael Canning’s team.

While the contest was largely low key, the presence of Gallagher between the posts for Glenswilly was one of the more noteworthy topics from the game.

Gallagher has played for his native Cloughaneely in the past, but it was as a soccer player that he made his name, forging a League of Ireland career at St Patrick’s Athletic and Finn Harps having had a spell at Celtic FC.

Gallagher – a Trench Cup winner in 2005 with Letterkenny Institute of Technology – is currently the goalkeeping coach with the Donegal senior football team and was assistant manager to Ollie Horgan at Finn Harps last season.

Gallagher was an assured presence throughout this afternoon’s game for Glenswilly.

Regular Glenswilly custodian Philip O’Donnell came on as a substitute in the second half and lined out at full-forward.
