Two Donegal players have received her first call-up to the Republic of Ireland senior women’s squad.

St Johnston’s Tyler Toland and Milford woman Amber Barrett are included for the first time ahead of the Women’s World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland on September 19 at Mourneview Park in Lurgan.

Toland only turned 16 earlier this month but the midfielder has been drafted into the senior panel by manager Colin Bell, while Barrett is included after featuring for Ireland in the World University Games in Taipei.

“It is a huge moment in any player’s career and they should be immensely proud,” Bell said.

“Claire (Walsh) and Amber have been in great form for their respective clubs this season and rightly take their place in the squad, where I expect them to challenge for a starting spot.

“Tyler is an exceptional young talent who I was able to watch closely during the Women’s Under 17 European Championships in May.

“She is a player I believe who would benefit from being around the senior squad as we look to progress the young talent we have in Ireland.”

This month, Toland won the Galway Cup with the Kildrum Tigers boys team. After playing for Sion Swifts ladies during the summer, Toland has since returned to Maiden City for the National League A Division campaign.

Toland was the Irish Under-16 Player of the Year for 2016. In the calendar year 2016, she played for all of the Under-15s, Under-16s and Under-17s at international level – but now moves into the senior ranks.

Barrett lines out for Peamount United in the Women’s National League.

They join Greencastle native Roma McLaughlin in the 20-player Irish squad for the qualifier.
