‘Special talent’ Brett McGinty claims ‘mesmerising’ win in Wales

THE PRESIDENT of the Donegal Boxing Board, Peter O’Donnell, has described Brett McGinty as ‘a special talent’ after a mesmerising win in Newport, Wales last night.

Deele College student McGinty overcame Jordan Thomas at the Pill Millennium Centre in Newport with the Oakleaf ABC man on fire.

McGinty was a part of an Ulster Boxing team that lost 7-4 to a Welsh Select, but the St Johnston man shared the Boxer of the Night with fellow Ulster boxer Conor Wallace from Newry.

McGinty conceded nine years to Thomas, the 2014 Welsh Senior champion. The Heads of the Valleys puncher overcame Kieran Gethin in the 2014 senior final and was a big test for McGinty.

But in a 71kgs contest that brought the house down, McGinty – who last weekend won his 12th Ulster title – delivered a rip-roaring performance.

“Brett was brilliant – he’s a special talent who is getting better and better,” O’Donnell said.

“His hand speed and accuracy won him the fight. He landed three or four shots to the head and body. Brett is super fit and Thomas just couldn’t live with him in the end up.

“Brett was on the front foot from start to finish. He was three or four times faster and he had a great variety of punches.

“The way he’s going, it’ll take a good boy to beat him.”

Commonwealth Youth Games silver medallist McGinty will now look to add to his six Irish titles next month.

A bout of food poisoning ruled Convoy’s Bryan McNamee out of the trip to Wales while there was no joy for Dungloe’s Adam Boyle, Raphoe’s Liam Crawford or Letterkenny’s Cameron Friel in their bouts.

St Bridget’s Clonmany boxer Edward McEleney was also on the bill, but his fight with Deano Price was an exhibition.
