GLENSWILLY’S PHILIP O’DONNELL stepped into the breach today to help DCU defeat Ulster University Jordanstown in the independent.ie Sigerson Cup semi-final.

With regular DCU goalkeeper Brendan Flynn picking up an injury during the week, O’Donnell – who is studying a PhD in Business at DCU – proved to be an able replacement.

O’Donnell kept a clean sheet as DCU, led by 1-8 from Shane Carey, won 1-14 to 0-13 against UUJ, the hosts.

“It was very tense in the end there,” the Glenswilly man told Donegal Sport Hub afterwards.

“It was just a case of keeping the concentration. We’re delighted and looking forward to tomorrow.

“UCD have hammered us twice already. They have a very, very strong team and what we brought to the table today will have to go up another 10 or 20 per cent again.”

O’Donnell is joined on the DCU squad by Caolan McGonagle (Buncrana), Cian Mulligan (Gaoth Dobhair) and Nathan Gavigan (Sean MacCumhaills).

DCU, the holders, take on UCD tomorrow at 2.30 in Jordanstown in the final.
