AFTER BREAKING THE women’s course record at Finn Valley AC’s St Stephen’s Day 5k, Sligo’s Mary Cullen is targeting Olympic qualification.

Cullen came home in a time of 15 minutes 45 seconds, shattering the previous record of 16:14 that was set by Vivian Cherioyut.

Now, the Sligo native is aiming to book a seat to Rio next summer in both the 5k and 10k.

“I had a bit of a hip injury in November. I missed a few key sessions and I’m only back working a few weeks so I’m pleasantly surprised,” she said of her St Stephen’s Day run.

“I thought that I’d go out and go after the lads. If I die, I die and if I don’t, I don’t. They definitely dragged me along.”

Finn Valley AC’s Patsy McGonagle is the Irish Athletics team manager and hopes to have Cullen as part of his team. He told Donegal Sport Hub: “This girl has tried on so many occasions for the Olympics. I hope it works out for her in 2016.”
