DONEGAL BOXERS will line up in 12 of the 37 bouts at next Sunday’s Ulster 9 Counties Boys and Girls 11, 12 and 13 Championship finals.

In addition a further six boxers from the county are guaranteed Ulster 9 Counties titles by way of walkover wins.

At this weekend’s quarter and semi-finals at the Halfway House in Burnfoot, there was good success for Donegal punchers with a particularly profitable day for Letterkenny Boxing Club who saw Michael Connor, Paddy McShane, Owen Ward and Michael O’Donnell all advancing to next Sunday’s finals.

Connor, at boy 3 33kgs, overcame Odhrán McKenna from St Pauls, while McShane defeated Christopher McDonagh in the boy 3 36kgs semi-final on Saturday.

Ward advances straight into the boy 3 42kgs final while O’Donnell defeated Ciaran McDonagh of Omagh to book a spot in the boy 3 52kgs decider.

Raphoe’s Liam McMonagle recorded two wins, against Kevin McArdel and Mark Campbell, to move into the boy 3 50kgs final.

He’ll be joined on finals day by clubmate Liam Crawford, who has a straight passage into the boy 1 44kgs final.

Jordan Saville from Dungloe will be in a corner for the boy 1 39kgs final after defeating Shea Tracey on Saturday and then seeing his semi-final opponent pull out of the bout.

Another Dungloe man, Oisin Wallace, will be in the boy 2 46kgs final. Wallace defeated Chad McGill on Saturday before defeating Dunfanaghy’s Odhrán McGinley in an all-Donegal semi-final.

Dunfanaghy’s Odhrán Doogan will be in the boy 2 44kgs final after he overcame Gerard Mullan in his semi-final on Saturday.

Illies Golden Gloves’ Tiarnan Moran (Boy 1 48kgs), Finn Valley’s Cian McDaid (Boy 2 31kgs) and Twin Towns’ Alannah Sweeney (Girl 3 44kgs) have been given passages straight into their finals.

Donegal is guaranteed six champions by walkover wins: Boy 1 46kgs – Adam Boyle (Dungloe); Girl 2 46kgs – Ciara McMenamin (Twin Towns); Boy 2 57kgs – Pauric O’Donnell (Dungloe); Girl 3 48kgs – Chloe McDaid (Illies Golden Gloves); Girl 3 52kgs – Leah Gallen (Finn Valley); Girl 3 70kgs – Shannon Tiffoney (Bundoran).

There was huge dismay today when Bernie McDonagh from Dunfanaghy lost in a boy 1 36kgs semi-final to Ben Cooke of Eglinton with the decision of the judges leading to an angered reaction from the Dunfanaghy crew.

Letterkenny’s Dylan Browne-McMonagle, also a rising jockey, was beaten by Bryce Collins at Boy 2 33kgs after he overcame Aaron Treanor on Saturday.

Dunree’s Stephen Duffy was beaten by Tiernan Glennon today after having defeated Patrick Lambe on Saturday, while Gerry Oates (Bundoran), Adam Hall from Dunfanaghy and Letterkenny’s Paul Brogan all suffered defeats.
