A DONEGAL LEAGUE fixture was abandoned this afternoon after an alleged brawl broke out late in the game.

The Brian McCormick Sports Premier Division game between Glenea United and Castlefin Celtic at Páirc Joe was abandoned by the referee, Joe McHugh.

Second-placed Castlefin led the now-bottom-of-the-table Glenea 3-1 at the time the referee called a halt to proceedings with JP Malley, Peter Bryson and Ronan Tourish getting the goals for Joe McGee’s team.

There were 15 minutes remaining when the game was stopped.

Referee McHugh had just issued Castlefin’s Mark Lafferty and Glenea’s Darren McGeever with red cards when the alleged incident, believed to have included players and spectators, occurred and the referee deemed its severity to be such that he blew the final whistle.

“All we really know is that the game wasn’t finished as we haven’t seen the referee’s report yet, but we will look at the report when it comes before us and decide a course of action then,” the Donegal League Secretary Jimmy Haughey confirmed to Donegal Sport Hub.
