DONEGAL lost out to Derry in an inter-county boxing tournament on Sunday night in The Plaza, Buncrana.

Derry regained a hold of the Derry News Cup after a 10-7 win.

Derry were led by the Commonwealth Youth Games silver medallist Brett McGinty. The St Johnston native and Oakleaf ABC powerhouse was outstanding in his win over Letterkenny ABC’s Oran Shiels, who gave a gutsy display.

In an excellent show that was well-matched by John Elliott, there were quite a few cracking contests.

Convoy’s double Irish champion Bryan McNamee was always in control against Francie Stokes with the Deele College student claiming an impressive win while Dungloe’s slippery southpaw Matthew McCole looked assured as he overcame Joe Kelly on a split decsion.

Fergal McLaughlin presented Eugene Duffy with the Derry News Cup at the end of the night.

Donegal will host another inter-county show this Sunday night at the Abbey Hotel, Donegal town, when they take on a Tyrone selection.

Meanwhile, the final Donegal Boxing Board meeting of 2015 takes place tonight at 8.30 in the Letterkenny ABC gym.
