USL: Bonagee defeat Fanad as postponement denies Rovers chance to close the gap

Both the 4 Lanterns Ulster Senior League games penciled down for Sunday were rained off with just one game surviving this week’s roster.

On Thursday night, Dean Larkin’s goal gave Bonagee United a 1-0 win over Fanad United at Dry Arch Park.

The Derry City-Swilly Rovers and Letterkenny Rovers-Finn Harps games on Sunday were postponed.

That means that Cockhill still hold a six-point lead over Letterkenny at the summit, with the cancellation means that Rovers were denied the chance to cut the deficit.

Bonagee United defeated Fanad United 1-0 on Thursday night in a dour game devoid of many clear chances.

Fanad had the first chance of the game in the first minute when Daire McDaid saw his well struck free kick hit the side netting. B

onagee had their first chance of note in the 15th minute when Aiden McLaughlin headed just over the bar from a Dareck Frankowski throw in.

On 20 minutes a superb through ball from Dean Larkin sent McLaughlin through on goal but he was denied by a brave save from Shane Graham.

Bonagee opened the scoring when Larkin broke through and lobbed Graham from 20 yards out.

Fanad felt aggrieved as there was certainly more than a hint of offside.

Two minutes later Davitt Walsh showed great skill down the left and his deep cross was just missed by the on-rushing Darren McElwaine.

Five minutes into the second half Fanad had Eunan Kelly to thank for keeping the score at 1-0 when he cleared a Darren Hunter header off the line after a corner.

In  the 65th minute some good play by Walsh set up Paddy Carr but his shot went over the bar from 20 yards.

Fanad were reduced to 10 men in the 70th minute when midfielder Oisin Langan saw red for a second yellow card.

However five minutes later Fanad missed a gilt edged chance to equalise when sub Cillian Gallagher was sent clean through by Walsh only to see his shot smothered by Wade.

The last chance of the game came with 5 minutes remaining when sub Dylan O’Brien seen his well hit shot from the edge of the box saved by Graham
