DONEGAL BOSTON defeated Wolfetones by a point this evening at Canton to win the North-East Men’s Senior Football Championship.

Donegal Boston 1-10 Wolfetones 1-9 (after extra-time)

Downings’ Lorcan Connor goaled in the opening minutes after Jake Whelan from Ballymun Kickhams had opened the scoring with a point, before adding another before the break to leave it 1-2 to 1-0 at half-time.

Wolfetones, who are managed by Malin native Darren Duffy, went ahead in the second half only for a brace of points from Emlyn Mulligan, the Leitrim forward, to edge Donegal Boston into a 1-4 to 1-3 lead. Nicky Kelly from Galway then tied it up at 1-5 apiece but with a minute to go it looked as though Wolfetones were going to take the title, leaving 1-7 to 1-5.

However two points in the last minute, from Moville’s Malachy McDermott, from a 45, and then Mulligan, forced extra-time with the score 1-7 apiece at the end of normal time.

In extra-time, Gavin Gallagher from MacCumhaill’s was sent off for picking up a second yellow card and he was joined on the sidelines by Matthew Smyth from Killybegs but Donegal forced their way in front with two Mulligan scores and one from Kelly and held onto win by a point.

Today’s team: Michael Boyle (Termon), Jason Noctor (Killybegs), Conor Burke (Antrim), Tony McClenaghan (Moville), Matthew Smyth (Killybegs), Darren Green (Downings), Brian Donnelly (Louth), Rory Kavanagh (St Eunan’s), Gavin Gallagher (MacCumhaill’s), Emlyn Mulligan (Melvin Gaels/ St Bridgid’s Dublin), Paddy McAleer (All Saints, Ballymena) Jason Whelan (Ballymun Kickhams) Lorcan Connor (Downings).
