Ciaran McGinley drives Kilcar to victory over St Eunan’s

CIARAN MCGINLEY SCORED 2-4 to ensure Kilcar maintained their top spot in the AllSportStore.com All-County Football League Division 1.

Kilcar 2-22 St Eunan’s 1-15

The side managed by Martin McHugh was almost unrecognisable from the one that drew with St Eunan’s in the Donegal SFC last month and the Letterkenny team had a litany of changes as well.

Still, the two did produce an entertaining contest in Towney.

St Eunan’s were 0-4 to 0-2 in front after 12 minutes with two frees from Lee McMonagle starting the ball rolling for David McGinley’s team.

However, Conor Doherty, Aodhan McGinley and Matthew McClean soon edged the hosts in front, 0-5 to 0-4.

The first goal of the afternoon came on 18 minutes when Ciaran McGinley went on a 50-metre run before shooting past Aidan Simmons in the St Eunan’s goal.

That made the score 1-5 to 0-5 for Kilcar and points continued to flow at both ends, with the locals content enough to go in 1-10 to 0-9 ahead at the break.

Although Darragh Mulgrew and Michael Miller scored early points for St Eunan’s in the second half, it was Kilcar who put the game almost out of reach with a profitable 1-5 without return.

The points in that rich vein came from Ciaran McGinley and four from Aodhan McGinley. Ciaran McGinley drove home his second goal of the afternoon on 42 minutes.

St Eunan’s, 2-16 to 0-11 down, needed a lifeline and got it when Miller’s long range free from all of 50 metres deceived Kevin Campbell in the Kilcar goal and went over the line.

Kilcar, though, steadied themselves and finished well. Matthew McClean scored two late points and although St Eunan’s scored the final three points – through Conor Parke, Miller and Donnacha Gallagher – it was Kilcar who took the two points.
